Being With Woman

I am writing to tell you about my 'initiation' on attending a birth for the first time a few weeks ago.

My training as a Doula with the College has included some wonderful and challenging moments in body transformation, rebirthing, the 5 day Women's Mysteries retreat and other groups. I have learnt to see birth not only as a 'normal' event but as an ecstatic and transforming experience. I have seen women 'rebirth' their babies and learnt to listen to the language of the body, a valuable grounding and preparation. Although nothing could have prepared me for the exquisite experience of being present at a birth.

Over 9 months I watched Eva's belly blossom and heard her fears and excitement. We talked and ate together in her kitchen, went to childbirth classes and bet at the birth centre where she had her baby. I arrived when Eva was having regular contractions, she was at times focused inward and at others making sounds of power with the contractions. I found myself instinctively staying very quiet and I was moved to offer encouragement in the most gentle and loving manner possible.

As the baby moved down and through her body, Eva's sounds moved deeper and lower and I ould see her body quivering with the spasms of contraction and release. The atmosphere in the room was 'timeless' and the air thick with energy and expression that did not need questioning, it simply was. There was no need to ask how Eva was feeling, she was showing us in her facial expressions, her body movements and sounds. I was in awe of the presence and beauty of this woman and child working together in birth. When the baby emerged I was filled with such certainty taht birth is the most natural thing in the world.

During the days following the birth I watched my body react and continued to journal my response to the experience of being present at this birth. I have realised in hindsight that I was strongly anchored in the present, the energy of birth commanded my attention and I was alert.

One week after the birth Eva presented me with a bunch of red roses and a card, 'Dear Jo, I have really appreciated all your support in the last months, you have been great. I admire your enthusiasm and dedication, you certainly helped to take some of the anxiety off my mind. Your massage, suggestions, listening ear and understanding really helped, thanks from all of us, Eva Dell, John Georgia and the star Nelson!'

I'd like to thank all the wise women of the college who have shared the wisdom of birthing - I came home from this birth with a strong feeling that the knowledge you share comes from a place of authenticity and integrity. I have found the college to be a place where my spirit can soar and my soul feels at home - for that there are no words to express my gratitude.

With Love Jo Watson Doula
